District 9 Review

District 9 fits into a couple categories, those being, drama, science fiction, documentary. It's hard to do that with any movie, but this movie, I believe has succeeded, and is unique and different from many other sci-fi movies. It's directed by Neil Blomkamp, who also is going to be directing a Halo movie later on, so watch out for that. This movie was based on a short film that was 6 minutes long, and was basically the same thing. I went to see this movie on opening night, and surprisingly there weren't many people there.

Spoiler alert. Don't read if you don't want to be spoiled!

Review of "District 9."

Plot Summary.
This guy Wikus, is set as the new director for the MNU, for the mission to move 1.8 million prawns from District 9, to District 10. Obviously, all does not fare well, and he has some troubles. One of them being that he tries to evict Christopher, whom is secretly, the leader of the mothership, that is hovering above the city of Johannesburg in South Africa. He's been looking for liquid for 20 years, and just got enough to start the ship and go home to his planet, but Wikus takes it for the research department for the MNU. The liquid does him good, and starts turning him into an alien, and his left arm is completely alien, after around 30 hours or so. This enables him to use the alien weaponry, which the MNU really wants badly. They take him in, want to harvest him, but he escapes. He then finds Christopher again, and breaks into the MNU to get the liquid. Basically, after that part, there's a lot of killing and death and chasing and whatnot involving a huge robot. That's always fun. The ship leaves, Wikus turns into an alien fully, and Christopher promises that he will return in 3 years to turn him back into a human.

The Good.
The first thing I'd like to get out, is that the graphics in this movie, are outright amazing. Obviously the film industry has gotten really advanced, but some recent movies, like Transformers, Harry Potter, Wolverine, didn't really have good graphics. I'm pretty keen at spotting good graphics, and this movie had top-notch graphics. Other than that, even the advertising for the movie was really good. I'm sure you've noticed if you go out and venture, that you've seen "No Non-Humans" signs in random places, and I think that's really cool. The acting was okay, and the weapons and robot were amazing. I loved the way the weapons work. The plot was really strong and very good. I like how the beginning and end part of the film were shot in documentary style, it was very nice. Yeah, lot's of good here. There was definitely very little cliche, and many unique ideas in this movie. It's not like other movies.

The Bad.
It's not hard to think of bad things about movies like these, but this one is an exception at it is unique. It does have some faults that I don't like about it, obviously. I didn't like that you leapt directly into 2010, when the aliens came in 1990. There were details about what happened, but I would have liked to see some more of what happened in the beginning, it would have been nice. I also didn't like how the aliens and humans communicated, but it is how some people communicate. For those of you who don't know, it's called Non-Convergent Discourse. It's used when certain dialects can't be used. In this case, humans can't talk like the aliens can, so they learned to translate each others languages through the years. It's as if you understand spanish, don't know how to speak it, but they understand english, but they don't know how to speak it. I also didn't like how some of the weaponry was reminiscence of the game Half Life 2, it was practically directly taken. Anyway, I think that's all.

My Overall Thought.
I thought overall, the movie was a pretty good one, and I look forward to a sequel, although there is no promise to one. The way the movie ended, the movie itself, and the people in the documentary section, gave all the possibilities to us anyway. I think in the end, it all depends on how successful the movie was. Looking back at Cloverfield, that movie was immensely successful, yet they are still reluctant to create a sequel. I would hope for a sequel from both of these movies. I'm also upset that it wasn't as big as a crowd as it usually is on opening days of films. I think this is a pretty good movie, and since it fits into so many genres, and is so creative and unique, it's worth a look at.

My Rating.
I'd give this movie an 8 out of 10. It's pretty good, but something just isn't there for me to give it a higher score.
